Dreamaire and Select
Comfort have many similarities and several important differences. The
Dreamaire line established the concept of adjustable firmness air
mattresses for everyday home use. Sleep Number folks started their company
after 10 years of demonstrated success of Dreamaire innnovations in sleep
technology. They produce beds nearly identical to the originals but with a
different marketing approach, and later the introduction of the digital
display pump (an unnecessary expense for the customer in our opinion). The
manufacturer of the Dreamaire line followed suit, came out with a pump
that remembered the pressure and could get back to it when needed, and so
the feature race began. Since then, manufacturers of adjustable firmness
beds have come up with endless variations on the basic mattress in an
effort to convince buyers that they need things that they really don't. As
a case in point, take edge-to-edge air bladders. No one sleeps on the edge
of the mattress so what difference does it make if that area has foam,
air, or bread pudding? We believe that Dreamaires have better build
quality at a better price when comparaded to comparable models. Don't be seduced by
frills like more expensive pumps and extreme pillowtops. For proper back
support, less is more. The visco memory foam upgrade eliminates the need
for a pillowtop and enhances the benefits of the adjustable air chambers.
The fact that we sell Dreamaire beds for much less than the equivalent
SC product has more to do with marketing structure than quality. In fact,
we would argue that Dreamaire makes a better bed at a better price.
Dreamaire has nearly 20 years of experience with these products, a
corresponding record of integrity, and excellent customer service and
satisfaction. As both a Dreamaire user and distributor, I appreciate the
company's small size because it allows them to remain very responsive to
their customers' needs. They will stay around another 20 years to honor
their warranties, judging by their track record to date.
Dreamaire does not spend vast sums of money on national advertising or
high overhead mall stores. This means that they can put money into top
quality materials and construction and pass the savings along to their

Select Comfort also
pushes their "foundation" and Dreamaire leaves the decision of
foundation, be it conventional box spring, platform, etc., to you.

product and preferred the Dreamaire bed, especially because SC puts an
annoying foam divider between the bladders.

their air bladders.
Nautilus
uses vinyl air bladders, puts their pump inside the mattress, and
charges about $1000 more per model than comparable Dreamaire
models.
