If you could simply dial up a winning attitude, healthy habits, type B personality, great sleep, grace, spiritual experiences, and a sense of meaning and purpose, wouldn’t you do it if it didn’t cost a fortune or require super human efforts? Of course you would. Effortless, automatic changes in our behavior, emotions, reactions, and thinking would make life a whole lot more pleasant and less stressful. If we could make such changes, it would seem like magic, like some wizard waved a wand and turned us into our ideal self, unlocked our potential, and set us free.

But free from what? What holds us back and keeps us in slavery, reacting like robots with no free will, no choice about moment-to-moment decisions and actions, often with serious consequences. What makes us fly off the handle and ruin relationships? What makes us overindulge our appetites? What keeps us from becoming the person that we imagine when we fantasize about “coulda, shoulda, woulda?”

Do we have a hidden script that we must follow blindly as if our life played out on a movie screen, a film that we cannot alter no matter how painful the story? If such a script exists, how can we change it so the movie of our life turns out the way we wish?

Those who have studied these questions through the ages have come up with several answers that may point us in the right direction. They maintain that messages that we heard as children form the unconscious script that determines in large part how we think, feel, and act. If we want to change, we must change these messages, substituting positive statements for the negative ones that we got from our parents, peers, and teachers who may not have meant us harm, but inadvertently passed on the negative programming that they received during their formative years.

How can we effectively replace counterproductive programming with positive affirmations? If we merely try to think positively, it requires constant vigilance and energy. As soon as we forget or get tired, the old messages take over and we slip back into habitual patterns and the downward spiral continues. Obviously, success can only come if we have a way to access our deep memory banks and rewrite the programs.

What prevents us from gaining entry to this area of our consciousness where we can start the process of deep, lasting change? It seems that we all have a watchman who stands guard during our normal waking state. This guard censors any messages that try to override our old programs. We have a deeply ingrained fear of change, preferring the devil we know to the devil we don’t. So when we affirm “I love to exercise” or “I prefer deep breathing to smoking” or some other change message, a voice pops up to deny it and the message never gets to first base.

Fortunately, we now have a simple technique that puts our guard to sleep and opens the door to our unconscious, allowing new messages to replace the dysfunctional scripts from childhood. This technique, known as brain wave entrainment, uses pulses of lights and sounds choreographed to lead our mental and physical rhythms into a state of deep relaxation called Theta. In this state, a pleasant, dreamlike, timeless place, the conscious mind takes a vacation and allows access to our unconscious and its repository of scripts. While you can use your tape by itself during sleep, or if you can relax deeply enough to become oblivious to your voice, most people will get faster and better results by using a brain wave entrainment device (like the Sirius) which  will accelerate the process and bring you into the optimal receptive learning state quickly. During the Light/Sound session, you will lose awareness of time and space. You may have a dream or just feel like you slept. At the end of the session, you will not remember much and it should feel like much less time passed than your actual session. Some have called this the "No Time" state. During these sessions, you can get more rest than hours of sleep. Regular use of brain wave entrainment can quickly reduce stress and improve many aspects of one's health and happiness.

During a Theta session of deep, rejuvenating relaxation, you will become very receptive and suggestible, the messages you have recorded will fall on fertile soil and have a good chance of taking root and producing the desired changes. So the question then becomes, what kind of messages work best? How do I know what to put into my receptive mind?

While you can purchase any number of self-improvement recordings (for the best, see the HPP series), you don’t always know the contents and this may cause reservations and lack of confidence. Your own voice, even if you don’t like it, will work better than another person’s. For these reasons we suggest making your own recordings with affirmations that you have created for your own situation.

The process of creating affirmations has the additional benefit of helping you to become clearer about your own needs and issues. It may take a little time to formulate the change statements, but it will yield large benefits in the long run.

The following rules for scripting self-improvement tapes will help make them effective and ecologically sound for your internal environment.

RULES FOR CREATING AFFIRMATIONS:
1. Make all statement positive. For example, never say, “I don’t procrastinate.” Instead say, “I get around to tasks on time.”
2. Put all statements in the present tense. Never say, “I will do things on time.” Instead, say, “I do things on time.”
3. Put statements in the first, second, and third persons. For example, say “I, John, enjoy studying” and then “You, John, enjoy studying” and then “John enjoys studying.” (Be sure to use your own name.)
4. It also helps to provide a reason for the suggestion, e.g. “Because I want to earn more money at my job, I study diligently and joyfully.” Promise a reward.
5. Keep the language simple and direct enough for a child to understand. The unconscious has not developed at the same rate as our conscious mind, hence the term “the child within.”
6. Exaggeration and emotionally charged words can facilitate the process of reprogramming. You might say something like “I love every part of studying/exercise/dieting, etc.”
7. Repeat suggestions. If you use an endless loop cassette or make your player repeat, this happens automatically.
8. Be careful about trying to remove symptoms, whether physical, emotional, or mental. It works better to deal with underlying causes. Instead of saying, “My sore throat is gone,” try affirming, “my body heals itself and knows what I need to feel great.” If you get sick because it provides a secondary gain like avoiding unpleasant tasks or situations, deal with your attitudes and affirm your ability to change your life and react positively to stress.
9. Use a strong, commanding voice that sounds calm, unhesitant, confident, and certain. Do the best you can and trust that you will soon become stronger and more confident as you use your recordings.

The above rules make sense when you understand that your unconscious mind operates like a computer, literally and simplistically, so “garbage in, garbage out.” Most programming took place before we could discriminate between beneficial and harmful suggestions. We accepted what we heard uncritically.

Use only positive suggestions because the unconscious does not understand the absence of something. If you say, “I don’t smoke, “ it hears “I smoke.”

The unconscious also has no concept of time. Therefore it does not help to say that something happens in the future. We need to convince our deep self that the desired condition exists now so the change can take place.

We recommend using first, second, and third person statements because we received our original programming in all of these ways. Other people said things to us as “You …” and they also said things about us “That John…”

Try to maintain an “attitude of gratitude” about yourself and your present situation. Parts of ourselves that we want to change probably got that way in an attempt to deal with a difficult situation. At the time, it seemed like the only way to survive, and it will keep hanging on until a better way comes along. If we can convey our gratitude and forgive it, it may consider a new, creative solution that will achieve the desired result.

When you start a self-hypnosis session with your light/sound device and recording, it pays to spend a minute or two imagining that the change you want exists. This imagining should involve as many of your senses as possible. For instance, if you want a new car, visualize the car, see yourself opening the door, smell the new car smell, see yourself getting in and sitting down, hear the car door close, see and feel your hands on the wheel, hear someone say, “You look great in that car,” and so on. Be there and your subconscious will believe that such an outcome exists and will have to configure reality to agree. Because it believes that you have the car, the steps necessary to get the car must also exist. Miraculously, your body/mind, in tune with more of reality than your conscious mind, will arrange events and point you in the right direction for your desired outcome to occur.

Once you have imagined your desired outcome, let it go. Relax knowing that you have planted the seeds and trust that they will grow if you simply allow them to. At a certain point, effort can hinder progress. Your unconscious self does miraculous things every second. Do you have to think about digesting your food, growing nails, pumping blood? Your body/mind already does more than you could ever do consciously and it takes care of a vast number of tasks simultaneously with no input from your conscious mind. So just make the suggestions and then allow your body to relax and de-stress. It will then reward you by making the changes you want.

When this reprogramming works, you will begin to experience changes happening automatically. You may notice yourself reacting calmly to the same situation that previously would have made you angry. You may realize that you look forward eagerly to exercising vigorously when just a week before you dreaded getting off the couch.

You now have the key that can unlock the door of your script vault. Now go in there and change them.
