NOTE: The manufacturer informs me that their MAX objects no longer work with newer systems and they have no plan to upgrade due to insufficient demand.
If you only want to use WR for personal biofeedback, go with Virtual PC on your Mac.
If you have plans for talking to other apps, the preferred set-up involves running WR on a PC (almost any will work), connecting to your Mac via a midi cable, and running MAX.
Virtual PC for Windows 95
from Connectix has been demonstrated to run the WaveRider on an IMAC.
Presumably it will run on a G3 as well.
WaveRider software comes on a 3.5" floppy disk. The IMAC does not
have a floppy drive. In order to install WaveRider software it will be
necessary to either use an external floppy drive/imation drive or
install it from a floppy drive located somewhere else on a network.
WaveRider interfaces with the computer through a serial port. The IMAC
does not have a serial port. Instead, the IMAC uses a USB port. There
are a number of products on the market that allow a USB port to act as
a serial port. The UMAC serial port to USB product (~$80) was
demonstrated to work on an IMAC running WaveRider. Notewell: some
vendors produce serial to USB devices that provide only a round serial
jack, others provide both a round and a "d-style" jack. The
WaveRider uses a "d-style" jack.
If using a USB converter the WaveRider may be powered on all the time
whether the software indicates the hardware is turned on or not. The
user will be aware that the WaveRider is consuming power by way of the
red LED on WaveRider hardware interface. In order to minimize battery
usage the user may want to disconnect the serial cable when the
WaveRider is not in use.
The G3 has an imation drive, thus eliminating the installation issues
the IMAC has. The G3 also has a serial port configured for a printer.
It has a round style plug.
Virtual PC for windows 95 was tested. Virtual PC for Windows 98 was
not. Virtual PC for Windows '95 sells for $179. Please check with
manufacturer for information concerning use of multiple copies of
VirtualPC.
WaveAccess does not warrant that WaveRider will function with
VirtualPC on all computers or that operation will be trouble free.
