Blue 470 nm LED light reduces bacteria that cause acne, other skin disorders, periodontal conditions. Also helpful for SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder). Controls MRSA.
Elixa’s LED arrays put out approximately 1 joule per minute per cm2, more light per dollar than any other arrays we know of. Our LEDs have a rating of 4000 mcd at 6.4mw. This compares favorably with so-called Cold Lasers and Low-level Lasers. They do not pulse because that would add significant cost to the product, and we have seen no solid, double-blinded research that indicates a difference in healing effects between pulsed and constant light.
120 LED Blue (470 nm) Array includes
- Universal 110-240v AC adaptor (will not work with batteries)
- Array approx. 3/4″x2″x4″
- Free S&H in US.
Research indicates that blue light controls bacteria that cause acne and periodontal gum disease, and improves rosacea and Seasonal Affect Disorder. New research finds effectiveness against MERSA.
Periodontal Research from Photochemistry and Photobiology Volume 80 Issue 3 Page 412-415, November 2004
The antibacterial effect of visible light irradiation combined with photosensitizers has been reported. The objective of this was to test the effect of visible light irradiation without photosensitizers on the viability of oral microorganisms. Strains of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacteriurm nucleatum, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus faecalis in suspension or grown on agar were exposed to visible light at wavelengths of 400–500 nm. These wavelengths are used to photopolymerize composite resins widely used for dental restoration. Three photocuring light sources, quartz-tungsten-halogen lamp, light-emitting diode and plasma-arc, at power densities between 260 and 1300 mW/cm2 were used for up to 3 min. Bacterial samples were also exposed to a near-infrared diode laser (wavelength, 830 nm), using identical irradiation parameters for comparison. The results show that blue light sources exert a phototoxic effect on P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum. The minimal inhibitory dose for P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum was 16–62 J/cm2, a value significantly lower than that for S. mutans and S. faecalis (159–212 J/cm2). Near-infrared diode laser irradiation did not affect any of the bacteria tested. Our results suggest that visible light sources without exogenous photosensitizers have a phototoxic effect mainly on Gram-negative periodontal pathogens.
Phototherapy with blue (415 nm) and red (660 nm) light in the treatment of acne vulgaris from British Journal of Dermatology Volume 142 Issue 5 Page 973-978, May 2000
In this study we have evaluated the use of blue light (peak at 415 nm) and a mixed blue and red light (peaks at 415 and 660 nm) in the treatment of acne vulgaris. One hundred and seven patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were randomized into four treatment groups: blue light, mixed blue and red light, cool white light and 5% benzoyl peroxide cream. Subjects in the phototherapy groups used portable light sources and irradiation was carried out daily for 15 min. Comparative assessment between the three light sources was made in an observer-blinded fashion, but this could not be achieved for the use of benzoyl peroxide. Assessments were performed every 4 weeks. After 12 weeks of active treatment a mean improvement of 76% (95% confidence interval 66–87) in inflammatory lesions was achieved by the combined blue–red light phototherapy; this was significantly superior to that achieved by blue light (at weeks 4 and 8 but not week 12), benzoyl peroxide (at weeks 8 and 12) or white light (at each assessment). The final mean improvement in comedones by using blue–red light was 58% (95% confidence interval 45–71), again better than that achieved by the other active treatments used, although the differences did not reach significant levels. We have found that phototherapy with mixed blue–red light, probably by combining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, is an effective means of treating acne vulgaris of mild to moderate severity, with no significant short-term adverse effects.

Note: We know of no specific rules for time of application or any time limitation either, but it makes sense to start off with 5-10 minutes and gauge the results before using it for extended periods. While we know of no research that has shown evidence of harm from using red light, as with any type of energy, it may have unpredictable effects depending on numerous factors, including medications, nutritional wellness, emotional stability, etc.
As with any other type of alternative healing modality, light therapy requires experimentation and common sense usage. If you notice any negative reactions, discontinue use and check with your healthcare provider.
We recommend a holistic approach to health that includes proper hydration and nutrition, exercise, elimination, rest, and a positive outlook. Deficiencies in any of these areas can contribute to poor health and pain, as well as lack of energy, focus, and motivation.
IMPORTANT CAUTIONS !
Do not fall asleep using the LED unit. Do not leave it running unattended. Do not cover it with blankets or clothing and leave it running as it may over heat and create a potential hazard. Do not use in the bathtub. Always shut unit off when done using it.
You can look directly at the lights without fear as they will not hurt the eyes, however, avoid shining them directly at open eyes for long periods.
